OVERVIEW OF THE NEW TOYOTA HILUX RANGE

The well-respected Top Gear summarized the new Toyota Hilux range quite succinctly when they stated that it remains “an unpretentious machine”.

It is a statement that resonates wonderfully because it underlines an important question: What else do you need a workhorse to do? Are the bells and whistles really necessary? The new range of Toyota Bakkies offers an answer.

Toyota has worked for decades at refining one of the most prolific names in the workhorse segment. The fruits of that effort lie here, this new range of Toyota Hilux. The Hilux bakkie is one of Mzansi’s top sellers, and this new range should only extend that longevity. Not only has Toyota elevated the performance of the vehicle with a plethora of driver-assist technology, but it has also focused its attention on matters such as tech and comfortability.

All new variants bear testament to Toyota ensuring that it incorporates innovation with its formidable off-road performance. Let’s explore the new variants a little more closely:

Toyota Hilux Single Cab Variant

The exterior of the new Toyota Hilux Single Cab is available in 13 variants and bears the first of a range of changes that the manufacturer has incorporated. The Hilux Single Cab is equipped with 17” steel wheels and a prominent black bumper. A standout would be the inclusion of LED brake lights and halogen fog lights with this variant.

The interior of the vehicle hints at elements of modernity with the integration of a multi-information display which allows users to connect their smartphones through it using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

The Hilux Single Cab range is also saddled with a choice of engines depending on the needs of the customer. Varying between a 2.4-liter engine through to a 2.8l-liter diesel engine, the enhancements have seen the bakkie perform at the consistent level that we are accustomed to.

Most noticeable about the drive is the range of driver-assist technology available to the customer. These include Trailer Sway Control and the much-needed Hill Assist Control. The latter innovation almost feels decades late in its necessity to help drivers navigate difficult terrain.

The Hilux Single Cab is also competitively priced. Here is where the choice of variant shines, as the consumer is bound to find not just a model that suits them in terms of specifications, but affordability as well. The entry-level Toyota Hilux 2.0VVTi S 5MT retails at R326 200, whilst at the top of the range, the Toyota Hilux 2.8 GD-6 4x4 Raider 6AT retails for R655 300.

Toyota Hilux Double Cab Variant

No doubt the most popular in the Hilux family, the new Toyota Hilux Double Cab has a reputation for a reason. The new range is available in 17 different variants, and the exterior has been restyled to reassert its presence as dominant and eye-catching. An immediate standout is the trapezoid grille, which pops regardless of the choice of colour.

Much like the Hilux Single Cab, this model can be found resting on 17” steel wheels or 18” alloy wheels (for the Legend models). The cabin is minimalist, kept to an all-black interior. The simplicity has a two-fold effect, one that reveals that the vehicle is not over-ridden with tech but also elegant at the same time. Most of the models in this range are fitted with black fabric seats.

The Hilux Double Cab is a strong performer. It navigates various terrain with ease and is available in a choice of petrol and turbodiesel engines. The engines deliver a range of power, from 110kW to 175kW at the top of the range. One of the most outstanding features here is the limited-slip differential. This piece of innovation assists drivers in potential wheelspin situations. Certain models of the Toyota Double Cab Bakkie also come equipped with automatic dual-zone air conditioning, ensuring the comfort of all passengers in the vehicle.

The models in this range are also priced competitively. Due to the scope of the range, the entry-model Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.7VVTi RB S 5MT retails at R479 200 to the top of the range Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.8GD6 4x4 Legend RS AT which retails at R917 900.

Toyota Hilux Xtra Cab Variant

Boasting 6 new models in the range, the new Toyota Hilux Xtra Cab also comes with more extras besides the additional room in its cabin. The Xtra Cab shares similar features with the Hilux Double Cab in the prominent grille that it features. Between the Raider and Legend variants underneath this umbrella, it rests on 17” or 18” alloy wheels.

There is also a wonderful variety of colours available with this new variant, with Toyota including Platinum White Pearl and Oxide Bronze to its arsenal. There is also variety in the interior of the vehicle, with a choice between leather or black fabric interior.

The engine ranges from a 2.4l turbodiesel engine to a 2.8l turbodiesel engine which at its optimum, can produce up to 150kW of power. Despite the extra room in the cabin, the Xtra Cab’s performance remains undeterred. It comes equipped with a stronger suspension system to better absorb shock during off-road activities.

Pricing options are not as varied as previous models in the Toyota Hilux family, but the scope remains pretty broad. The entry-level Toyota Hilux Xtra Cab 2.4 GD-6 RB Raider 6MT retails at R506 300 whilst the Toyota Xtra Cab 2.8 GD-6 4x4 Legend 6AT is at the top of the range and weighs in at R698 400.

HOW DOES THE TOYOTA HILUX MEASURE UP TO ITS COMPETITORS?

Comparisons with its competitors are inevitable, so how does the Nissan Navara compare to the Toyota Hilux? The answer does not reside in a blow-by-blow account of specifications. We believe that the value of your vehicle should lie in the aftersales as well. The poignant questions that should be asked are: What is the resale value of my vehicle? The depreciation? The cost of parts?

It is here where Toyota shines and perhaps owes its incomparable reputation. The Hilux has an incredible resale value compared to the more niche Nissan Navara. Due to its mass production, parts are also plentiful. This means that Toyota parts are not only easy to acquire, but they are also less expensive. The Nissan Navara may certainly rank, but it cannot measure up to the Toyota Hilux, then and now.

Performance is the decider if we compare the Toyota Hilux to the Isuzu D-Max. Top-of-the-range double cabs for both vehicles will see the Toyota Hilux deliver up to 175kW of power compared to the Isuzu’s 140kW. Toyota’s service plan intervals also kick in at 10 000 km, allowing you to service your vehicle faster.

Against the top of the range Ford Ranger, The Hilux Double Cab still manages to outpower its competitor, which only has an output of 157kW. The braked towing capacity is also more significant with the Toyota Hilux, which manages a 3 000 kg load compared to Ford’s 2 500kg. It is clear to see that the Toyota Hilux still manages to pip its competitors to the finish line, even when it comes down to the minutiae.
