The well-respected Timeslive summarized a description of the Toyota Fortuner wonderfully when they stated that the vehicle was “tough and sophisticated”. There is no better way to describe how South Africa’s best-loved SUV has managed to blend a new modern exterior and remain as competitive as ever on (and off) the road.
Toyota is already on the money with the Fortuner. Its popularity is unmatched in Mzansi, especially since it is a part of the overcrowded SUV market. The question is: Would Toyota rest on its laurels? Or would it crank up the volume and add more distance between themselves and their competitors?
The answer is the latter. Not only has Toyota improved on the Fortuner’s already impressive performance aesthetics, but it has also underlined it with an edge of luxury not present in its rivals.
The new range of Toyota Fortuner is available in 7 different variants:
The exterior of the range is one of the most prominent changes on the new Fortuner. Modern lines and stylish fittings had given the Toyota Fortuner an image that is at once domineering and elegant. The side mirrors are colour-coded and retractable and LED headlights are available for all models in the new range. The lighting is an important feature, allowing the Fortuner to remain prominent and visible to all other drivers on the road. A standout safety feature here would be the inclusion of the Blind Spot Monitor, a useful innovation that allows drivers to know when another vehicle has entered their blind spot.
The interior has been majorly renovated with the inclusion of an all-black interior. It is a nifty touch that immediately elevates the SUV to a space that is at once practical and stylish. Despite the looks, the new Toyota Fortuner has also been equipped with a plethora of safety features such as ISOFIX child seat anchors.
The technology quota has also been filled. The inclusion of the JBL speakers, Infotainment System, as well as a multimedia system has all ensured that there is a superb level of comfortability for all occupants. Eloquent upgrades aside for a moment, the new Fortuner remains a formidable performer. The 2.8l turbodiesel engine has been renovated to produce up to 150kW worth of power and 500Nm of torque. It has resulted in a drive that is well-balanced and consistent with the standards that we have come to expect from the Toyota Fortuner.
Toyota has also ensured that it has fitted the latest models with the latest driver-assist technology that there is. Available options include Downhill-Assist Control as well as Hill-Assist control, all of which are incredibly useful in assisting the driver to navigate any kind of difficult terrain.
The new range has also been reasonably priced. The entry model Toyota Fortuner 2.4GD-6 R/B retails at R623 200 whilst the top of the range is the Toyota Fortuner 2.8GD-6 4x4 VX A/T, which retails at R870 900.

The new Fortuner is without a doubt the finest contribution to the SUV segment. Even though it is famed for its after-sales service, it is also a stunning on-road performer. The latest range is kitted out with a 2.8l engine which produces a maximum torque of up to 500Nm. It also has efficient fuel consumption.
Without a doubt, any model that has been released after 2012. Models in this family have been completely upgraded, not just in terms of design but also in performance.
With good maintenance, a Toyota Fortuner should last 16-20 years before completely wearing out.
The range is manufactured in India, more specifically in Bidadi.
In comparison to its competitors, the Toyota Fortuner has an incredibly reliable engine. Especially if the engine is well-maintained.
Toyota has not left a stone unturned with the release of the new Toyota Fortuner. Despite already being a segment leader, the manufacturer has not let up on continuously striving to improve its offering to the market. There are exciting exterior and interior improvements, touches of technology and safety, as well as improved performance. It remains as strong as ever on and off the road, and this latest release will only extend its significant lead.
By comparison, the Nissan X-Trail does not benefit from distinct styling or lines. The latest Pajero cannot measure up in terms of performance or torque, whilst the safety features on the Ford Everest cannot compare to the Foruner. None of the competitors can deliver quite the same suave SUV experience.
