In an exciting new development for cricket enthusiasts and car lovers alike, Mahindra South Africa has joined hands with Lions Cricket as their Official Vehicle Sponsor. The two-year partnership, unveiled at the iconic DP World Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on 18 November 2024, marks a significant chapter in Mahindra’s journey in South Africa.
The agreement was signed during a momentous occasion as the Proteas prepared to take on India in the last of four T20 International matches at the "Bullring," further underlining the global significance of this collaboration.
Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa, expressed his enthusiasm:
"As Mahindra enters its third decade in South Africa, we are excited to partner with Lions Cricket as the official vehicle sponsor at the DP World Wanderers Stadium. This collaboration is an important milestone for us, symbolising Mahindra’s growth as a trusted and well-known brand across the country.”
This year has been a celebratory one for Mahindra, having reached the milestone of two decades in South Africa and assembling the 20,000th Mahindra Pik Up at their KwaZulu-Natal facility.
The partnership with Lions Cricket extends far beyond branding. Rajesh highlights the alignment of values between Mahindra and Lions Cricket in their shared commitment to community upliftment.
"One of the many things that attracted us to Lions Cricket was their focus on supporting communities and causes in Johannesburg and South Africa as a whole," he said. "From developing the sport in schools and rural areas to supporting causes like breast cancer awareness, feeding schemes, and promoting the health of young girls in schools, we are proud to support these initiatives as part of our broader commitment to South African communities."
This partnership is Mahindra’s second major foray into cricket sponsorship. Earlier this year, Mahindra announced its sponsorship of the Joburg Super Kings, one of the leading teams in the SA20 Cricket Series. Both partnerships involve providing vehicles and funding to support the teams’ activities on and off the field.
Mahindra will provide Lions Cricket with a fleet of their latest SUVs and bakkies, including the all-new Mahindra XUV300. With advanced safety features like six airbags, vehicle stability control, and a powerful turbo-petrol engine starting at just R254,999, the XUV300 is set to become a key player in the Lions’ fleet. It joins the flagship XUV700 and the rugged Scorpio-N, recently crowned South Africa’s SUV of the Year.
These vehicles will be prominently showcased at the DP World Wanderers Stadium during national and international matches, where fans can look forward to engaging activities and giveaways.
The partnership also includes providing Mahindra Pik Up bakkies for logistical support, enabling Lions Cricket to host dynamic events at the DP World Wanderers Stadium. According to Jono Leaf-Wright, CEO of Lions Cricket:
"We are truly grateful for this meaningful partnership and having the backing of Mahindra. Like everything we do, we have big dreams and plans, and this two-year agreement allows us to make a significant impact. We’ve had extensive discussions on how we can make a difference, and now is the perfect time to share this exciting news."
The Lions Cricket team boasts a glittering track record, holding titles such as the reigning T20 Challenge Series Champions, 4-Day Domestic Series Champions, and 1-Day Series Champions. The Lions Academy team has also been recognised with the 2023 Sports Organisation of the Year Award.
Mahindra kick-started its sponsorship last Friday at the DP World Wanderers Stadium during the final T20 international match between South Africa and India. Fans can look forward to seeing Mahindra in action at upcoming domestic matches, including the much-anticipated clash between the DP World Lions and Western Province.
As Mahindra and Lions Cricket unite, they’re not just driving the #PrideOfJozi; they’re steering towards a brighter, stronger South African future.
