Isuzu D-Max Road Trip: The Ultimate in Fuel Economy and Reliability

In today's world, the cost of living is high and businesses are struggling to stay afloat. Fuel saving is thus one of the most important aspects when it comes to purchasing a car. Isuzu is known for producing reliable, fuel-efficient vehicles, and their latest model, the Isuzu D-Max, is no exception.

Isuzu Motors SA set out to highlight the budget-friendly capabilities of its D-Max bakkie range, particularly the 1.9 models. To do that, they recently put their newest model to the test in a Johannesburg to Cape Town road trip.

Grant McCleery, former racing driver and head of the Isuzu Driving Academy got behind the wheel of a D-Max 1.9 Ddi Double Cab 4x2 manual bakkie. He completed the 1,431 km drive using 73.82L of fuel, which translates to an impressive 5.1L/100km! Additionally, the average speed of 100km/h over the distance really showcases the D-Max's power and fuel efficiency.

These results become even more impressive when we compare them to a similar test done in 2021. The previous model D-Max 2.5L Single Cab used a total of 102.31L of fuel to cover 1,454km, with an average consumption of 7.02L/100km. This highlights the significant improvements made in fuel economy with the latest D-Max model.

The seventh-generation D-Max is homegrown in Struandale, Gqeberha, and went on sale in 2022. The D-Max’s latest-generation 1.9L four-cylinder intercooled turbo diesel produces 110kW of power and 350Nm of torque. It features a 200 MPA common rail direct injection system and a variable geometry turbocharger for excellent response and acceleration.

Isuzu offers 24 D-Max models in South Africa, 16 of which are powered by the economical 1.9 Ddi engine. There are five Single Cabs, four Extended Cabs, and five Double Cabs available in the 1.9 Ddi engine range, offering a wide range to choose from.

With the launch of the seventh-generation D-Max last year, we raised the bar in all areas, including technology, safety, comfort, and refinement,” says Kevin Fouché, department executive: product planning at Isuzu Motors SA.

Isuzu has always been a reliable brand, and the latest 1.9L turbo diesel D-Max bakkie is a testament to that. Their commitment to producing high-quality vehicles that are affordable to operate and maintain has made the D-Max models an excellent choice for those looking for a fuel-efficient bakkie with a powerful engine.
