Workhorses, by tradition, are known for their practicality. If we had to peruse the range of single-minded promises that bakkies are associated with, being formidable performers is definitely among them. Factors such as the loading bay, towing ability, and navigating rugged terrain are what make one workhorse more special than the other.
It is almost as if Volkswagen understood the limitations of this perception. It meant that we do not require the new generation of bakkies to do more. This is perhaps why the initial launch of the VW Amarok was such as success. VW not only assembled a top-of-the-range bakkie, they decorated it with a premium exterior and a plush cabin.
Adding a dollop of luxury to a vehicle that is capable of scaling a steep incline was just the injection that this segment needed. With this, the latest range of VW Amarok, the manufacturer continues along the same vein. VW has added excellent touches of innovation to enhance its successful range. The new Amarok is available in 5 different variants:
The VW Amarok has a very commanding stature, which is apparent when we have a look at the front design. A common problem in bakkie variants is the operation of the tailgate, which has been smoothed out with the Amarok. While the range does feature a wide load bin, more impressive is the inclusion of a third brake light that doubles up to add visibility at night when loading items.
The cabin of the Amarok has a distinct air of luxury. The leather-covered steering wheel and high-resolution multi-function display are a great addition. The range also has a variety of upholstery for consumers to choose from. Amongst these are Salipra, Nappa, and Vienna varieties. VW enthusiasts will no doubt recognize the inclusion of “Climatronic” air conditioning, a useful functionality which automatically adjusts the temperature in the vehicle.
The Amarok also enjoys some performance enhancements. Observers of the range will know that it is formidable on (and off) road performer, with constant comparisons to its peers. There is a broad scope of specs between the 5 variants. They are capable of up to 200kW of power and 580Nm of torque. The VW Amarok also has a slight edge in the addition of an over-boost innovation. This allows it even more power on the road.
There are a few recognizable features here, especially with the App-Connect functionality and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. A feature that does stand out, however, is the Electronic Voice Amplification. It allows the voice of the driver to echo to any passengers who are occupying other parts of the vehicle. A great safety feature is the ParkPilot functionality, which assists drivers in parking their Amarok efficiently. Volkswagen has struck a neat balance in maintaining the Amarok’s fierce performance with an array of safety features.
The Amarok range has also been competitively priced. The entry-model Volkswagen Amarok 2.0 BiTDI Double Cab Highline 4Motion retails for R778 600 whilst the top-of-the-range Volkswagen Amarok 3.0TDi Extreme 190KW 4Motion A/T D/C P/U comes in at R1 096 300. It is on par with the competition, even more so considering the range of features the vehicle comes equipped with.

The build of Amarok is of the highest quality and there is an abundance of airbags. This greatly contributes to the vehicle’s reliability.
Reviews have shown that the 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine is the best.

The Amarok is one of the best in its segment when it comes to towing. This is owed to the immense torque that the vehicle is equipped with.
It is possible, yes. One of the easiest ways to do it is by plugging off the controller under the car.
Inserting luxury into the traditional workhorse is interesting. Not only does it elevate what we expect from the traditional bakkie, but it also appeals to those who may normally overlook a pickup as an option. If the units sold are any indication of success, Volkswagen has hit the nail on the head yet again.
