GWM TO BRING NEW ONE-TONNER BAKKIE RANGE TO SA IN 2021

South African bakkie enthusiasts, assemble! We’ve got some very exciting news to share. If you’ve been waiting for Great Wall Motors to bring you a one-tonner that can get in the same ring as the Hilux, Ranger, Amarok and Navara, your wait is almost over! Come 2021, a new GWM bakkie range will hit our showroom floors and it is set to get pulses raising.

At the moment, we’re keeping things firmly under wraps until GWM International finishes development and starts up the production line in all earnest, but there are a few bits of information we can share to whet your appetite. Here goes!

The range was recently revealed to spectators at the Shanghai Motor Show, and while it will be released in a few other territories first it should reach our shores by 2021. As it stands at the moment, the new GWM range includes three iterations, namely:

  • A 4x4 variant that will be ready to tackle our fickle off-road terrain with everything from a built-in winch and triple diff locks, to a whopping 900mm wading depth and 7-setting ATC.
  • A luxury variant that will feature all those must-have bells and whistles, including leather seats, seat warmers, an intelligent infotainment system with high-precision voice control, cruise control, and more.
  • A fully electric derivative that will allow GWM to usher in the future of eco-conscious vehicular consumption.

The bakkies will be built on the same platform as the next-gen Haval 2019, and clock in in the same weight and size class as the current Ranger and Amarok. The engine line-up is yet to be 100% firmed up, but at the moment we're looking at a 2-litre turbodiesel that will deliver in the vicinity of 145kW and 390Nm.
